A Guide for Taking Homeopathic Remedies

How to Take the Remedies

Homeopathic remedies come in both pellet and liquid form, depending on whom you are purchasing them from.

The liquid form is usually preserved with alcohol and can have from 20% to 87% alcohol. Dogs and especially cats will not like the taste of the higher alcohol preparation but you can easily dilute it in water and then administer it. You can take several drops of the liquid preparation of the homeopathic remedy and add it to a one or two ounce dropper bottle (preferably amber) that contains not tap water but distilled or spring water. Then you can administer a few drops each time to the mouth according to the directions of how many times a day the doctor wants.
Homeopathic remedies also come in tablet form or pellet form. The size of the tablets and pellets vary and we humans would just let whatever size pellet we have melt in our mouths. That doesn’t happen with pets. In my practice I used the very tiny #15 sized pellets which are so small they stick to a cat or dogs gums and they can’t spit them out so they have to melt. Dogs often spit out the larger tablets and pellets and the large size does not work at all with cats. You can do one of two things with the larger sized pellets. (1) Crush them in a small folded piece of paper and then use the folded paper to slide the powder into the cat or dogs mouth. (2) Add several pellets to a one or two ounce dropper bottle (just like above) and shake and now you have a liquid preparation of the remedy just as in above. Make up a new, fresh preparation of liquid remedies every week or two as there are no preservatives in the bottle.

Many places say that you cannot handle the remedies-which, in fact, is not true. As long as your hands are clean you can handle the pellets without a problem. I have been doing this for over 30 years and I can assure you that it works just fine.

TAKE REMEDIES AWAY FROM FOOD AND NEVER MIX THEM IN FOOD. If your pet has just eaten it is best to wait about 20 minutes from after he or she has eaten to administer the remedies. Also they should be 20 or more minutes before a meal. Again, I have been doing this for a long time and if your schedule permits you to wait only 5 minutes this is fine to do, although not as optimal as 20 or more minutes away.

How much should I give them each time?

The most important thing to remember is the number of pills/tablets or drops of liquid is not critical. In fact, it’s not at all important. You can give 1 to an elephant and 10 to a mouse. The size of the pills is also not important because you are administering the ‘energy’ of the medicine and not the actual ‘material substance’ of that medicine.

How often should the remedy be taken?

Follow the directions from your practitioner or follow the directions on the bottle.

If you spill the remedy, do not put it back in the bottle to avoid contamination. Keep pellets at room temperature and you can refrigerate home made liquid preparations. Keep away from computers and microwaves.

What are the numbers and then the C or X on the bottle?

The strength of a homeopathic remedy is actually proportional to the number of times it is diluted and shaken. A 6 means it has been diluted and shaken 6 times: a 30, 30 times. As far as X versus C: An X potency is a remedy that is always diluted 1:10 times each time. The C potency is diluted 1:99 times each time.

In closing, it is more important to select the right remedy that to worry about how many pills to give and what strength. Whether an elephant or a mouse the dose is the same. The weight of the animal is not important.
